💡 Beat the crowds at dawn

Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera are calm before 8am and far easier to photograph. They fill with visitors from around the world by midday.

💡 Hidden gems off the main trail

Ruriko-in (special spring/autumn openings), Ohara's Sanzen-in, and Kibune–Kurama offer Kyoto's temples and nature with far fewer people.

💡 Mind the photo rules

Some private lanes in Gion ban photography (fines apply); don't photograph geiko/maiko without consent. Tripods and drones are widely prohibited at temples.

💡 Book early for blossom & foliage season

Accommodation sells out fast during cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons — book a few months ahead.

💡 Get around by bus + IC card

City buses reach most sights and accept IC cards (ICOCA/Suica); a subway-and-bus day pass exists. In peak seasons buses get stuck in traffic — combining with trains is often faster.

Graze through Nishiki Market, Kyoto's kitchen. Try yudofu (hot tofu) near Nanzen-ji/Arashiyama and obanzai, Kyoto-style home cooking.
