Signature local dishes to try
🍜Miyako soba
Flat wheat noodles in a light pork broth — traditionally the toppings are hidden beneath the noodles.
🥬Goya chanpuru
Stir-fried bitter melon, tofu, pork and egg — Okinawa's signature dish, a staple on Miyako too.
🍇Umibudo (sea grapes)
A crunchy, grape-like seaweed, typically eaten simply with ponzu — an Okinawan specialty.

- Late May–Jun and Oct–Nov are most comfortable; early July has the clearest water. Typhoon season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–early Oct.
- ✈️ Getting there
- Miyako Airport (MMY) is ~55 min from Naha, with direct flights from Haneda and Kansai too. No international flights — connect via Naha or mainland Japan.
- 🚗 Getting around
- Public buses are sparse — a rental car is effectively required (bring an International Driving Permit). Drive on the left.
- 🕒 Time & currency

💡 Cross the toll-free sea bridges
Irabu Ohashi (3,540m) and Ikema Ohashi are toll-free sea bridges — parking on the bridge itself is banned, so stop at the lots on either end.
💡 Sun protection is essential
Subtropical UV is intense, especially May–Sep — bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a rash guard; beach shade is scarce.
💡 A rental car is the norm
Sights are spread across the island and public transit can't cover them — foreign visitors need an International Driving Permit.
💡 Snorkel at Yoshino Beach
The island's top snorkeling beach — coral starts just meters from shore. A seasonal shuttle (Apr–Oct) covers the steep access road from the parking lot.
